Frequently asked questions
How do you work out my rank in past years?
After every exam, the GATE organising institute publishes a Statistical & Performance Report showing how many candidates fell in each marks and score band, and the rank range of each band. We use those official figures for 2023–2026 and interpolate between the bands to find the rank your marks would have got.
Why is my 2027 rank shown as a range?
Your rank depends on how hard the 2027 paper is and how everyone else does, and neither is known until the result. The General cut-off for Biotechnology, for example, went from 38.9 to 28.0 to 25.8 in three years. So we show the rank your marks got in each of the last three years, adjusted for the expected number of candidates, and the range that covers them.
Which matters more for admission — rank or GATE score?
Score. IISc, the IITs and most institutes shortlist for M.Tech, M.Sc and PhD interviews on your GATE score out of 1000, and the bar differs by institute, department and category. Your rank tells you where you stand; your score is what gets compared with cut-offs.
How is the GATE score calculated?
GATE Score = 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) / (Mt − Mq). M is your marks, Mq is the General qualifying mark (mean + standard deviation, kept between 25 and 40) and Mt is the average of the top 0.1% of candidates (or the top 10, whichever is more). The score is capped at 1000. Until the result, we use last year’s Mq and Mt.
How are MCQ, MSQ and NAT questions marked?
MCQ: a wrong answer costs ⅓ of the marks (−0.33 on a 1-mark question, −0.67 on a 2-mark one). MSQ: you get the marks only if you select every correct option and no wrong one — there is no partial credit and no negative marking. NAT: correct if your answer falls inside the official range, with no negative marking. Questions marked MTA (marks to all) give everyone the marks.
What are the qualifying marks for OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST and PwD?
The OBC-NCL and EWS cut-off is 90% of the General cut-off. The SC, ST and PwD cut-off is two-thirds of it. Both are cut down to one decimal place. Qualifying lets you apply for admissions and jobs that use GATE; it does not guarantee a seat.
How long is a GATE score valid?
Three years from the date of the result for admissions. PSUs and other recruiters set their own rules, and most ask for a score from a recent exam.
Do I need to sign up?
No. Both tools are free and show your result without asking for your name, phone number or email.
Is this my official GATE result?
